Things to do
Allant Holidays is superbly placed for holidays all year round with beautiful countryside, sporting activities, cultural and historical sites to visit.
Adventurous & Sporting Activities
Canoeing and kayaking; climbing and canyoning; abseiling; paragliding; horse-riding; fishing; adventure parks in the trees; a mountain luge (summer or winter); golf courses and driving ranges; local rugby matches to watch; plus skiing, tobogganing, husky-sled driving or snow-boarding in the winter; swimming or tennis in the summer: the Pyrenees can provide whatever sporting experience you want.
Sight-seeing & Day Trips
The famous pilgrimage spot of Lourdes, the Roman ruins and abbey of St Bertrand de Comminges, the abbey d'Escaladieu, vineyards, the castle at Mauvezin, the spa town of Capvern-les Bains and many pleasant market towns & villages. The mountains themselves are fabulous for a day out - Payolle, Argeles Gazost, Arreau & Bagneres de Luchon being nice places to stop en route for a coffee or lunch. The cirque de Gavarnie is spectacular, as are the views from most of the closest mountains (Col d'Aspin, Col de Peyresourde, Col du Tourmalet, Hourquette d'Ancizan, Luz Ardiden, Pla d'Adet etc.) Further a field are the large cities of Pau or Toulouse for shopping; space and aeroplane centres; the cable car and observatory at the top of the Pic du Midi; a drive through the tunnel into the very different scenery and culture of Spain; the historic walled town of Carcassonne; or the Altantic and Mediterranean coasts.
Within easy driving distance for a half-day visit are numerous prehistoric caves, the fabulous Pyrenees animal park, eagle centres and zoos, castles, adventure parks, aquariums, indoor & outdoor play parks. The mountains offer a raft of opportunities for families with great spots for picnics, a summer mountain luge, cable car trips, trains, the Pic du Midi observatory, water sports, climbing etc. Our closest town of Lannemezan has an excellent play park (with petting zoo, pony rides, pedalos and tree-climbing) plus a bowling alley, indoor play centre and a huge tree-climbing/suspended play jungle. Other popular spots for families are a trip to the beach - the Atlantic coast is around 90 minutes away (Biarritz) - or the historic walled town of Carcassonne, which is good for a day trip at just under 2 hours away.
The Pyrenees National Park provides beautiful scenery all year round and we can suggest day-long excursions on your own or with a qualified guide. Or you can simply take a stroll from the house through the country lanes, nature reservoirs and villages that surround us. There is a folder of suggested walks with instructions and maps for you to use. We can provide car transfers and picnics if you want to start further away and of course hearty breakfasts and an evening meal are available if you are planning a full day's excursion. We have enjoyed fabulous walks with our children at the Cirque de Gavarnie (you can hire horses, ponies or donkeys to ride here too), around castle ruins at Luz St Saveur, or by the beautiful lakes at Cap du Long.
The Mountains of the Pyrenees
With our central location in the foothills of the Pyrenees we have easy access to four main valley roads into the mountains, making a whole range of famous cols easy to visit. Taking the road south towards Arreau, you will find the Col d'Aspin, Hourquette d'Ancizan, Col d'Azet and Col de Peyresourde - all lovely to cycle or drive over and great for walks and picnics. Further along this valley are the mountains of Pla d'Adet and Piau Engaly. Taking the second valley road via Bagneres de Bigorre and then on to Campan and Sainte Marie de Campan you reach the Col du Tourmalet with its statue of Octave Lapize, the Geant, at the top and a challenging trail up to the Pic du Midi (the highest peak on the French side of the Pyrenees). A third route via Lourdes and Argeles Gazost takes you to Hautacam, the Col d'Aubisque and Luz Ardiden. The little known climbs of Cap Nistos and the Cap de Lac de Cap de Long are also well worth visiting for their tranquility and breathtaking views. The fourth road heading to Bagnere de Luchon takes you towards the Col de Portet d'Aspet, Col du Portillon (where you can cross the Spanish border), Col de Mente, Port de Bales and the other side of the Col de Peyresourde.
